Beanies and Caps: How to Wear Headwear Without Ruining the Fit

Cap, crossbody bag and sneakers on a concrete background

In autumn, headwear is the first thing you put on and the first thing people notice. The right one turns a basic hoodie into an outfit. The wrong one makes the whole look feel like an accident.

Four types worth owning

- Beanie: the autumn and winter staple. A short fisherman cut sitting above the ears reads streetwear; a longer one pulled to the brow is the classic.

- Dad cap: soft crown, curved brim, adjustable strap. The most versatile piece you can own; works with a hoodie or a shirt.

- Snapback / fitted: flat brim, structured front. Louder, best with oversized silhouettes.

- Bucket hat: a summer and festival piece, but in a dark colour it works into autumn too.

Three rules that work

1. Pull the colour from the fit. Your headwear should repeat a colour you're already wearing: sneakers, a hoodie graphic, your trousers.

2. Match the proportions. A wide jacket and baggy pants can carry a bold cap. With a slim outfit, go for a simple beanie.

3. One logo at a time. Big logo on the cap plus big logo on the hoodie is too much. Let one piece lead.

The most common mistakes

A beanie perched on top of the head like a hat for a doll, a worn-out cap with a sweat-stained band, and headwear that matches nothing else you're wearing.
