How to Spot a Hoodie That Actually Lasts

Folded hoodies stacked on a wooden shelf in a store

A hoodie is the easiest garment to get wrong. And you only find out a month later, when the collar sags and the inside has pilled into little balls.

The good news: you can spot a solid hoodie by three things, all checkable before you pay.

Fabric weight decides everything

GSM — grams per square meter — is your fastest filter. Under 280 GSM is a summer piece that goes see-through after a few washes. 320 to 400 GSM is the sweet spot: holds shape, keeps you warm, doesn't feel like a blanket. Above 450 GSM you're in heavyweight territory, which lasts years but stays stiff for the first month.

If the brand doesn't list GSM at all, that's already an answer.

Ribbing and seams

Grab the waistband and stretch it. Good ribbing snaps back; cheap ribbing stays loose. Same test on the cuffs — that's the first place a hoodie gives out.

Turn it inside out and look at the shoulder seams. Double stitching lasts. Single stitching starts splitting around month six.

Drop shoulder vs. classic fit

Drop shoulder puts the seam partway down your arm, which is what creates that relaxed streetwear silhouette. Classic fit sits on the joint. If you're buying drop shoulder, don't also size up twice — it's already oversized by design.

Quick check: the sleeve should end at the base of your thumb, not halfway across your palm.

The takeaway

Weight, ribbing, seams. Three things, fifteen seconds. It saves you money and a closet full of hoodies you never wear.
