Rainy Day Streetwear: How to Look Good When It Pours
Autumn rain shows up exactly when you've just put on your best fit. The good news: dressing for wet weather doesn't mean dressing like you're going hiking. A few smart pieces do the job.
Outer layer: a shell, not a poncho
Start with a light waterproof jacket – a coach jacket with a membrane, an anorak or a techwear shell. Look for taped seams and a hood that holds its shape. Stick to black, olive or charcoal; dark colours hide wet patches.
Layer a hoodie or fleece underneath. When the rain stops, the shell comes off and the outfit still looks complete.
Pants and length
Nothing ruins a day like a soaked hem wicking water up to your knees. So:
- Cargos or nylon pants dry much faster than jeans.
- Go for a cropped length or a cinched hem so nothing drags on the ground.
- Denim works, but dark raw denim will bleed when it gets wet.
Shoes that survive puddles
Leave the white mesh runners at home. For rain, pick treated leather or suede sneakers, trail shoes with a rubber outsole, or low chelsea boots. Hit them with waterproofing spray before the season starts – five minutes that saves a pair.
Accessories
A cap under your hood keeps water out of your eyes, and a crossbody bag under the jacket keeps your phone dry. Umbrella? Sure – just make it compact and black.
