One Kettlebell, Three Moves. That's a Full Home Gym
A kettlebell is the best value in home training. One bell, half a square metre of floor, and it covers strength, conditioning and mobility at once. The catch: almost everyone makes the same three mistakes in week one.
A kettlebell is not a dumbbell
The centre of mass sits outside the handle, so the bell pulls on every rep. Your body has to manage momentum, not just lift a load. That's exactly why a swing trains your posterior chain differently than a deadlift — it isn't the path, it's the deceleration.
The practical payoff: you learn to control a load that's already moving. That transfers to cycling, to five-a-side, to picking a kid up off the floor.
The three moves you need
1. Swing — feet shoulder width, bell between them, hinge at the hip, don't squat. The power comes from the hips; your arms are just rope. 5 × 15.
2. Goblet squat — bell at your chest, squat down, elbows inside the knees. The fastest way to learn an upright squat, because the front load straightens you out for free.
3. Turkish get-up — slow, technical, you'll hate it and you need it. 3 × 3 per side. It teaches your trunk and shoulder to work as one unit.
What weight to buy
Untrained man: 12 or 16 kg. Untrained woman: 8 or 12 kg. It sounds heavy, but a swing with a light bell is pointless — there's nothing to decelerate. Buy one size up rather than one size down.
The detail that decides everything
Hinge, not squat. If your knees drift forward on the swing and the bell goes up because your arms lifted it, you're doing a different exercise with real risk to your lower back. Hips back, shins vertical, spine neutral.
If you're unsure, a few sessions with someone watching you is worth more than any video. A private gym you book by the hour, like GymHome, is ideal for that — mirror, space, nobody waiting on your rack.
Filming your own technique breakdowns? TubeVoice dubs them into other languages, so the content works outside your market too.
Buy one bell, learn the swing properly, and you won't need anything else for three months.
