Driving to German Christmas Markets? Sort the Sticker First
Late November is when half of Central Europe drives into Germany for the Christmas markets. It's an easy trip by car — right up until you realise most big city centres are low-emission zones and you can't enter without the green sticker.
Where you'll need it
Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Leipzig all have an Umweltzone wrapped around the centre — exactly where the markets are. A few popular cities don't have a zone (Dresden and Nuremberg, for example), but rules change, so always check before you go. And if you're doing a multi-city market tour, one zone-free stop won't save you.
Checks during the season
Advent brings thousands of cars into city centres, and local enforcement knows it. They focus on car parks and streets around the markets. No sticker means a €100 fine, and "I'm just a tourist" doesn't count. The sticker stays valid for your car indefinitely, so it's a one-time job.
Practical tips
- Order early — it arrives by post, and December mail is slow.
- Stick it on the bottom right of the windscreen so it's clearly visible.
- Even with the sticker, consider Park & Ride: weekend parking downtown is brutal.
