Basement Remodel: Turning the Coldest Room Into the Favourite One

Moisture first, taste later

No paint fixes a damp basement. Before you shop for a sofa, leave a hygrometer down there for a week. Above 60% humidity, buy a dehumidifier, not a rug.

Check your downspouts, the slope of the ground around the house, and the joints at the base of the wall. Nine out of ten wet basements have their cause outside, not inside.

A low ceiling isn't a dealbreaker

Most basements sit around 7 feet and people give up over it. A few moves change everything:

- No downlights. Wall lights and lamps pull the eye sideways instead of down.

- Low furniture. A sofa with a low back visually buys you eight inches.

- Light ceiling, darker floor. Old trick, still works.

- Don't box in pipes and ducts if it costs you height. Paint them the ceiling colour and they disappear.

The light that isn't there

A basement has one small window, or none. The answer isn't one bright tube but three or four sources at different heights. Stay around 2700K, otherwise it reads as a garage.

Flooring decides how it feels

Over concrete you want a moisture barrier, then vinyl or carpet tiles. Floating hardwood in a basement is a gamble.
