The Dining Room People Actually Stay Sitting In
Almost every flat has a table. Very few have a dining room anyone wants to sit in. The difference usually isn't the price of the furniture — it's three details you can fix in an afternoon.
The light hangs too high
The most common mistake: the pendant is left wherever the ceiling wiring sits, roughly two metres off the floor. The light spills across the whole room and the table stops being a place you focus on.
The right height is 55–70 cm above the tabletop. Yes, the bulb ends up near eye level — that's the point. It creates a pool of light that holds people together. Go for around 2700 K, not 4000 K. Cold light belongs in the utility room, not over dinner.
Leave 90 cm behind the chair
The second thing nobody measures: the gap between the table edge and the nearest wall or cabinet. You need 75 cm minimum, 90 cm ideally, so someone can push a chair back and stand up without shuffling sideways.
If the numbers don't work, the answer isn't a smaller table — it's a different shape. A 110 cm round table seats four in a space where a 140×80 rectangle simply doesn't function.
Add one soft surface
Dining rooms sound empty because everything in them is hard: tile, glass, wood. The echo tires people out before they notice why. A rug under the table (60 cm wider than the top on each side), fabric curtains, or an upholstered bench instead of two chairs. Any one of the three makes conversation at the table noticeably easier.
