You don't need a spare room

Every "home library" gallery shows a two-storey Victorian house with a rolling ladder. Useless if you rent a flat. The real version is smaller: one wall, shelves floor to ceiling, a chair you actually sit in, and a lamp you can reach without standing up.

That's it. The rest is detail.

Start with the wall, not the books

Pick the wall first. The one you never look at — behind the sofa, next to the door, under the window if there's no radiator. Measure it. A full metre of packed shelves holds around 25 to 30 books, so a three-metre wall takes 350 to 400 volumes. Most people own fewer than they think.

Built-in looks better. Freestanding costs a third and moves when you do. In a rental, go freestanding and paint it the same colour as the wall.

Light is the whole trick

A mediocre library with good light beats a beautiful one in the dark. Three sources:

- Ceiling for the room.

- A wall light or picture light for the spines.

- A reading lamp at shoulder height, warm (2700K), angled down at the page.

Never put the lamp behind your head. You'll read your own shadow.
