What Size Rug Do You Need? The Rules That Make Rooms Bigger

Bright living room with a sofa and a large area rug

You buy a nice rug, drop it in the middle of the room, and suddenly the space looks smaller and disconnected. The culprit is almost always size. A rug isn't floor decoration — it's an island that ties your furniture together.

The front-legs rule

In a living room, at least the front legs of the sofa and every chair should sit on the rug. That's what turns separate pieces into one seating zone. Leave 8–18 inches (20–45 cm) of bare floor to the walls. For a typical living room that means 8×10 ft (240×300 cm); a 5×8 only works in a genuinely tiny space.

Bedroom and dining room

- Bedroom: the rug should extend 18–24 inches past each side of the bed. For a queen, go 8×10 laid sideways and leave the top third under the nightstands bare.

- Dining room: add 24–30 inches on every side of the table so chair legs don't catch the edge when pulled out.

Test it before you pay

Tape the outline on your floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day. Or faster: snap a photo of the room and upload it to RoomFlip — the AI shows you the room with a bigger rug and a new furniture layout. And if you film the makeover, TubeVoice can dub it into other languages.
