Curtains, Blinds or Shades? How to Dress Windows the Right Way
You can have a new sofa, a great rug and perfect lighting. But if short, sad curtains hang on the window, the room still looks unfinished. Windows are where the eye goes first.
Length and height: the classic mistake
Curtains should stop 1–2 cm above the floor or just kiss it. Never halfway down the wall. And don't mount the rod right above the frame: go 15–20 cm higher and 20–30 cm wider on each side. The window looks bigger and the ceiling taller. That trick costs you a few screws.
Pick the fabric for the job
- Linen or cotton: soft light, relaxed vibe. Great for living rooms.
- Blackout: for bedrooms, if summer sun wakes you at 5 a.m.
- Roller shades: narrow windows, kitchens, home offices. Zero bulk.
- Wooden blinds: warm look and precise light control.
In small apartments, layer: a shade for privacy, sheer curtains purely as a frame.
Color: blend in or stand out
Curtains matching the wall color make a room feel larger. A contrasting color turns the window into the focal point. Both work. Just decide before you buy.
